There are a number of things to take into account no the least of which is the right type of loft boarding to use. We only use 18mm thick moisture resistance board that is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and is also EN 13986 compliant too. This means that not only are you assured of great quality but also that the wood has been produced from sustainable resources.
Perhaps this goes without saying, but did you know that your loft takes up one third of the floor space in your home and is very valuable? That one whole extra floor that you properly aren’t making much use of. Adding Loft Flooring or boarding to your loft is like adding in up to 50% more floor space to your home!
87% of people use their loft space for storage so you may not see the benefits of having your loft boarded. Let’s face it though- getting in and out of the loft isn’t easy at the best of times and add to that the difficulty and danger when trying to navigate the many joists and loft designs. Items often end up stacked any old how after being just shoved in through that horrible dark cold hole, often while balancing on a step ladder.. or worse.. a chair. Its an accident just waiting to happen. By loft boarding your attic you will be able to store your precious items safely for future use. You will be able to move them around more easily, move yourself around more easily and find those long lost trinkets right away.
It is always recommended by us that when you have your loft boards installed you also have the recommended levels of insulation installed too. This is currently 270mm and can save you up to £250 a year off the costs of heating your home. However even if you do decide not to save money in that way and not to have the additional insulation the boarding itself has been found to help you home become more efficient and warmer. So you will still save money!
As noted above your loft space is very valuable and the more space you have in your home, the more it’s worth. Loft Boarding helps increase the value of your home with the additional floor space it creates. Having that extra space, whether it’s for storage or for everyday use can really make a difference to the value of your home. Not only this but it’s been shown time and time again that when showing prospective buyers around your property having a loft that already been boarded can be a very big plus!
Types of Loft Boarding and Loft Flooring
Standard Loft Boarding.
Standard loft boarding is where we place loft boards directly onto the joists. This is the fastest way to board a loft however isnt suitable for the majority of lofts. If you have wiring, pipework or downlights installed then we will often have to raise the loft floor slightly using timber battens to raise the loft floor above the pipes and wiring. We can determine this quickly when we carry out the survey at your property.
NB- This is no longer the recommended method for boarding out your loft.
Raised Floor Loft Boarding
This is our recommended method for installing loft boards into your attic space. We are approved Loftzone Raised Floor Loft Boarding Installers. Raised loft floors can be installed in most properties but is especially beneficial for new build properties and properties that have lots of insulation. The sub floor is built to raise the loft boards over the insulation, pipework, wiring and downlights and create a strong safe platform that can be used for storage and walked around on safely.
